Expect much Advancement in Earth, Space, Physical and Biological Sciences following renewed collaboration between NASA and NSF

Research on ways to advance Earth, Space, Physical, and Biological Sciences will not change because the interested parties are willing to continue working together. That’s because both the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Science Foundation of the United States (NSF) have signed a memorandum of understanding. For a long time, the two agencies have found a way of benefitting from similar research activities mutually. The collaboration has gone a long way to helping NASA promote scientific progress, and the agreement only means that it won’t change any time soon.

The recent agreement covers several research topics, including education, engineering, and science revolving around the agencies’ missions. According to NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, such collaborations will help research and inspire the STEM professionals yet to come. It covers all areas, including Earth, Space, and the International Space Station (ISS). It is no secret that the collaboration between NASA and NSF has been in existence for quite some time. Research has revolved around many disciplines, such as heliophysics, astrobiology, planetary science, astrochemistry, and astrophysics. The study has resolved some mysteries surrounding the origin of life, exo-planets, gravitational waves, and space weather, including shedding light on these matters.

An excellent example of such a collaboration is the Greenland and Antarctica’s research activities, including fieldwork. The research has shed light on the latter’s ice sheet, how its research stations can communicate, and the impact that ancient meteorites have had on the ice sheets. Other researchers have also seen the beginning of Digital Library, Cyber-Physical Systems, and National Robotics initiatives. After all, different focuses include monitoring the climate and oceans, remote sensing, Earth system modeling, and Earth system science. As far as the ISS is concerned, NASA and NSF have also worked together coming up with many findings. Aboard ISS, the two agencies have mostly worked on physical and biological researches. Specific areas include mechanobiology, tissue engineering, plasma physics, and microgravity.

Therefore, the agreement doesn’t mark the beginning but the continuity of the collaboration between NASA and NSF. It also means continuing the partnership between the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory (ISSNL) and NSF. The partnership will focus on improving the Sun-Earth space weather prediction. They also want to use the Antarctic facilities to the maximum. It also aims to increase participation in engineering and science, especially using talents in various institutions. Even the students who are not entirely represented in the STEM stands a chance to benefit. So, the future of STEM educators and math, engineering, technology, and science professionals seems bright.
